Getting Started
How Does A Professional Organizer Work?
A professional organizer usually works with you at your home or office in the space that needs to be organized. A NAPO-MN Professional Organizer will do this confidentially, and provide the support and encouragement you need. Because you are working in a one-on-one partnership with a professional organizer, it's important that you work with somebody you are comfortable with.
When you have one or more space(s) in need of organization, it's sometime difficult to determine just how it got to be a problem. Perhaps you find yourself buying things on impulse which you don't need or won't use. Or maybe you have an emotional attachment to certain items, making it hard to get rid of stuff you're no longer using. Professional organizers ask questions to help you determine what obstacles are getting in the way of being organized. That way they are able to offer solutions that best meet your needs.
All organizing projects -- such as clearing clutter, unpiling paper, or setting up a new office -- require decision-making. Professional Organizers help you make the necessary decisions by asking questions, offering advice and providing hands-on help. They do this during multi-hour "work sessions" though some organizers also offer "needs assessments" to give you a game plan for how to organize a space without hands-on involvement.
In addition to providing hands-on help, most professional organizers can also recommend resources to you, so that you can sell, donate, recycle, or throw away your item(s) with ease. NAPO Minnesota has provided a number of these resources on this site as well.

How Much Do Professional Organizers Charge?
Fees vary based on geographic location, types of organizing services needed, and experience of the organizer. Some organizers charge by project rather than by the hour. Ask about fee structures and discuss your budget when soliciting a proposal from a professional organizer.
How Do I Find A NAPO Member/Professional Organizer?
If you know of friends, colleagues or others who have used a professional organizer, consider asking for recommendations. Otherwise, use the free and confidential Find An Organizer search tool. NAPO Minnesota recommends that you contact at least three Professional Organizers to find the one who best matches your organizing needs, personality, and budget.
